Weddings don’t have to be big to be beautiful. There is something truly intimate about a family-only beach destination elopement that makes it so much bigger than it really is. It is especially intimate for me, as I feel more like a guest than a vendor at these family events. I get to talk to everyone, there aren’t a lot of details to focus on, and I get to be pretty darn close to the whole thing – I hear the vows much more distinctly also – and I love that these two wrote their own. We didn’t get to meet before their First Landing State Park wedding, so I loved hearing what these two were thinking and learning a little about their relationship and how sweet they are on each other.
What made this event even better was my favorite officiant – Reverend Ken Lane. (If you are looking for an officiant in Hampton Roads, he is by far the most well-spoken and creative officiant I’ve ever had the opportunity to work with as a wedding photographer. He creates a beautiful atmosphere for the ceremony.) There were no shortage of sniffles and tears as he spoke and even less when these two shared their vows with each other. There was a moment when Reverend Lane had everyone come together as a family to pray over the bride and groom, which was one of the most intimate moments I’ve experienced as a wedding photographer.
With cloudy skies and a steady wind, we were lucky and the rain held off until just after the last requested portrait. We were able to get all of the pictures they wanted, and I was very happy with how they turned out, despite the weather. We finished up and quickly headed off to the cars to say good-bye’s before the rain began to fall, and off they were to a family dinner together.
