OMG is it hot out or what? Despite being sad about the lack of weddings this year, I am SOOOO happy that I don’t have to be outside in this heat wave! At least I have the Fall to look forward to. Fall sessions are by far my favorite – there are fewer sweaty days and I could just stare at all the color in the leaves for days. Why can’t it be Fall all the time?!
So, with all this downtime (during which, I have to admit, I’ve been very lazy with keeping up my blog posts) I have challenged myself to catch up on blog posts. (We’ll see how that goes in a few weeks…lol.) First up is this lovely couple that had reached out to me for an engagement session but then agreed to model for me to practice some night lighting techniques. I really wanted to do the night shots in Downtown Hampton since they have so many decorative twinkle lights in the trees, and Leticia and Olivia agreed. I was so glad to find someone willing to do let me practice on them! I also allowed time before sunset for a short session to get them some natural light photos.
We started at Millpoint Park and walked around the marina. The light was perfect! I had so many ideas I wanted to try, but time was limited. After the sun set, there was a quick wardrobe change and then, ugh, lighting issues. I was using a new light for the first time and just couldn’t figure out how to sync it correctly with my other light. These ladies were so sweet and patient the whole time until I finally got it figured out. Unfortunately, they had to go (Olivia was on-call) after the last few pictures, so I didn’t get to try everything out that I’d wanted. But I was still so happy that I did this practice engagement session before my HPO wedding a couple weeks after this (you can see those night shots here).
Overall, I am so happy with this practice engagement session. The light was beautiful, and having a plan in my head of where I wanted to shoot throughout Downtown Hampton made a huge difference. I absolutely love the quaintness of the area and would love to shoot more sessions there!
