I love being able to spend time with my couples before their wedding day. Engagement sessions are the perfect way to do that. We get to chat and get to know each other a little, explore a new place, or find new ways to look at a familiar one! It also give them a sense of familiarity with me that makes them just a little more comfortable in front of my camera on their wedding day.
Of course, my clients have their own reasons for wanting engagement photos as well – for Save-the-Dates, engagement announcements, wedding guest books, or just to have some nice prints to display in their home or at the wedding. I always try to guide my clients to pick a place that they both enjoy, that means something to them, or has been a big part of their life together. I’ve had clients choose beaches and parks, but I’ve also had clients who chose to have part of their session in a pub enjoying a draft beer together, sitting in the kitchen playing cards, or just walking together on a nature trail. Some of my clients want the full experience with multiple outfits and locations, and others choose a shorter session at a single location. I always encourage my clients to BE THEMSELVES and to pick a location and outfits that they truly feel will let them do so during their engagement session!
Alison and Paul didn’t get to meet with me before booking (they just relocated to Hampton Roads), so an engagement session was definitely a perfect time for us to meet and get to know each other before they tie the knot in May. Since they were not from the area originally, I suggested Yorktown Beach – which is a great little spot for photos! The weather was pretty overcast but warm during one of our strange fluctuations in weather this February. Despite the dark skies, I was able to get some honest and beautiful images of these two expressing their love for one another. I’m really looking forward to their wedding in just a few weeks!!
